//Exhibitions

The Alternator has two primary exhibition spaces – the Main Gallery and the Project Gallery. The Main Gallery is generally used for major exhibitions by established mid-career artists or strong work by significant emerging artists as well as curated group exhibitions. The Project Gallery is more suited to local emerging artists, small group shows and video installations.

On occasion, major exhibitions are selected to occupy both galleries. The Alternator programs one to two years in advance with much of the work selected from an annual call for submissions. The gallery welcomes proposals from both individual artists and independent curators and maintains a strong interest in fostering national and international exhibition exchanges.

//Community Window

The Community Window is a floor-to-ceiling glass enclosed case exterior to the gallery in the main interior concourse of the Rotary Centre for the Arts. It is programmed on an ongoing basis throughout the year with primary focus on local emerging artists, art students and community arts groups.

It is particularly suited for installations, including videos presented on monitors, and has been used on occasion for performances as well as presentations of photography and other two-dimensional work.

//Special Calls

Special calls to artists for members' exhibitions, commissioning projects, exhibition exchanges, the Wearable Art Gala and more.

//Artist-in-Residence

The Alternator has offered thematic visiting artist residency projects since 2003. Typically organized over the summer for four to six artists, these projects seek artists willing to engage the community directly both within and outside the studio while working in a site-specific matter on projects that can be researched and realized within a one-month time frame.

Visiting artists have come from various Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Montréal, Edmonton, Toronto and Winnipeg, and internationally from Chicago and Philadelphia. The residencies are based in Studio 111 in the Rotary Centre for the Arts. When the studio is not in use during the fall and winter, Alternator members are welcome to propose one-month projects that can be completed and exhibited in the studio.

//Work

The Alternator has two permanent part-time administrative positions, but occasionally hires short-term contractors when funding is available.

The gallery also offers work experience through student practicums, volunteer positions and service on the board of directors and various board committees, including the media arts committee and the events committee.
