//About
The Alternator Media Arts Centre was established in 2002 to provide access to production equipment in order to encourage growth of a nascent media arts community in the B.C. Interior.
The centre supports artists in the research, creation, production and dissemination of independent work that is innovative in theme, subject, point of view or esthetic strategy. Artists retain complete creative control of their projects. Since inception, local and visiting artists have produced more than 75 video and audio works at the centre. Other activities include workshops, screenings, visiting artist residencies and commissioning projects. The centre has a small DVD library and welcomes donations.
The centre, overseen by a media advisory committee that reports to the Alternator's board of directors, is supported by the Media Arts Section of the Canada Council for the Arts.

//Access
Gallery members may use the editing suite and borrow media equipment if they are able to satisfy gallery staff that they are familiar with its proper use. Completion of an introductory workshop and/or orientation may be required prior to access.
Equipment loans and suite bookings are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The editing suite may be booked for up to three days at a time and gear may be borrowed for a maximum of three days in a row. Equipment must be returned by 1 p.m. on the specified return date unless prior arrangements are made.
Under no circumstances are borrowers permitted to allow third parties to use equipment or the editing suite. Any damage incurred to equipment must be reported immediately to gallery staff. The borrower is responsible for any damage or loss of equipment.
A $25 deposit is required to sign out equipment or to borrow a key to the editing suite. The deposit is refunded upon timely return of gallery property. All parties borrowing equipment must sign a user agreement and provide official photo identification such as a current driver's licence.
The centre reserves the right to refuse or revoke loan privileges.

//Activities
Although media arts production is encouraged through access to equipment, motivation and support within a media arts community is also essential to creative development. The centre seeks to promote growth of a collegial community through activities including informal discussions and social events as well as member screenings held on a bi-monthly basis. These activities are a great way to meet other media artists, learn about new opportunities and discuss your projects. Best of all, they're free.
Future plans for the centre include a small lounge where members can drop in to watch selections from the video library.
Upcoming events will be posted on this website. Watch the Calendar under Current Affairs for updates.
If you would like more information about activities or want to organize an event, please contact the Alternator at info@alternatorgallery.com.
