//Description

This fun and funky adult event is not a fashion show in the traditional sense - it's an artistic exploration of all types of body adornment.

It features creative experimentation with hair, jewelry, accessories and original one-of-a-kind wearables made from any and all materials, including plastic, metal and paper. Artists have created outfits from everything from computer keyboards and teabags to string licorice and bubble wrap. Artists exhibiting work in the show are supported by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, including hair and makeup stylists, lighting and sound experts and a front-of-house crew. The fun includes door prizes, a silent auction, music and videos.

The Wearable Art Gala organizing committee is seeking sponsors, prize donations and silent auction items. Please contact the Alternator at (250) 868-2298 or info@alternatorgallery.com if you would like to be involved.

//The 2007 Wearable Art Gala

Things were hopping at the Rotary Centre for the Arts on March 3 as some 50 artists participated in the fourth annual Wearable Art Gala before the event's largest audience yet. This year's wearables included everything from a licorice-tassled dress and a skirt decorated with tampons to outfits made entirely from playing cards. It was the first time the show was held in the Mary Irwin Theatre. But the theatre couldn't contain all the enthusiasm - artists paraded through the entire centre, performed in glass cases and spilled out onto the lawn for fire poi performances. Cool sound was provided by DJ Marvinduey in the atrium, JGirl and Manousos in the theatre, and a team of mobile sound-can spinners who entertained during intermission. Special thanks to emcee Phil Johnson whose sonorous tones graced the event for the second year in a row. UBC Okanagan professors Renay Egami and Byron Johnston and their first-year students were back again, assisted by an incredible team of volunteers, led seamlessly by UBC practicum student David Markin. Thank you everyone!
