//The 2009 Wearable Art Gala

Self-expression and extravagance reigned at the Alternator's Wearable Art Gala 2009, as a huge, diverse and daring crowd took in the sold-out theatre show, and over 200 partygoers danced late into the night, making it the Alternator's most successful event ever.

Stage Show
The sold-out Gala Show blended burlesque sex appeal, clever design, breathtaking performance art, vaudeville humour, and sheer spectacle. Congratulations to the award winners in all prize categories: Amber Choo's Bright Idea lightbulb disco ball for Most Innovative Use of Materials; Chunky Chunky Meat Paint by Citizen Lube Productions for Most Outrageous Performance; Pineapple Kiwi by Jacqueline Rieger for Hair and Make-up; and Varua by June Nicolay for Most Poetic. The Kinshira Performance Troupe won the $500 prize kindly donated by George Cwiklewski for the People's Choice Award, and Gerard Cadger's Industrial Angel, a mysterious and beautiful four legged creature constructed of recycled metal won for Most Cover Worthy. Michael V Smith was fabulous as the Emcee.

Closing Party
It was Prom Night meets Burning Man at WAG Unleashed. Costumed performers mingled with gala-goers dressed to the nines and dance party guests of all stripes - the elegant, the sexy, and the just plain outrageous - in a fantasy space created by DesignMode. Mad street style, vintage glamour and gender mayhem combined as partygoers went all-out, adorned with dramatic body art provided by Martin Garépy with DJs JGirl, Manousos, and Wood n Soo presiding.

//The 2008 Wearable Art Gala

In 2008 the Wearable Art Gala unleashed some 50 artists including 35 students from UBC Okanagan who participated in a feast of moveable art. The performance was punctuated with big Diva entrances and costumes ranged from the beautiful to grotesque. Highlights included a battle dress made from 2000 chopsticks and other innovative uses of materials including jigsaw puzzle pieces, balloons filled with pebbles, tennis balls, pillows and telephones. The performances were outrageous and challenged the barriers of audience and performer thanks to the artistic vision of Neil Cadger, a performance professor at UBC Okanagan.

Cool sound was provided by JGirl and Manousos in the theatre and sound-can spinners who performed during intermission. Special thanks to Emcee Ellen Churchill who came out in candy burlesque and kept the audience in stitches between performances. UBC Okanagan professors Renay Egami and Byron Johnston and their first-year students were back, assisted by an incredible team of volunteers. Thank you everyone!

//The 2007 Wearable Art Gala

Things were hopping at the Rotary Centre for the Arts on March 3 as some 50 artists participated in the fourth annual Wearable Art Gala before the event's largest audience yet. This year's wearables included everything from a licorice-tassled dress and a skirt decorated with tampons to outfits made entirely from playing cards. It was the first time the show was held in the Mary Irwin Theatre. But the theatre couldn't contain all the enthusiasm - artists paraded through the entire centre, performed in glass cases and spilled out onto the lawn for fire poi performances. Cool sound was provided by DJ Marvinduey in the atrium, JGirl and Manousos in the theatre, and a team of mobile sound-can spinners who entertained during intermission. Special thanks to emcee Phil Johnson whose sonorous tones graced the event for the second year in a row. UBC Okanagan professors Renay Egami and Byron Johnston and their first-year students were back again, assisted by an incredible team of volunteers, led seamlessly by UBC practicum student David Markin. Thank you everyone!
